This seems to be quite a common feature of these type of players. If you have bought your machine within the last 12 months it should still be covered by warranty so go back to the supplier. I thought maybe it had something to do with rented movies vs my own DVDs, but I have watched rented ones on there numerous times, so I dont think that's it, unless there is some type of strange code on them that my player does not like. My machine is a 7 inch portable player by Initial. When it works I really like it. It has a fast forward option that my other player does not have and it's cute.It would play some discs and not others, and there were some disks that refused to load.They fixed it by replacing the laser. Now I know a probable cause. I firstly cleaned the laser lens with an art brush.I loaded an unscratched DVD onto the player platform, left the lid open but used a match stick to push down the switch which the lid normally activates when closed. I found that the DVD was spinning intermittently, i.e. starting and stopping. From this I deduced that there was a problem with the dvd drive. I unplugged the dvd player,removed the dvd, turned the player over and removed 6 small screws (including one under a label) holding the base on, used some gentle persuasion and patience to get the base to come off (it is pushed over several clips around the four sides which hold it on as well as the screws) and I carefully lifted off the laser and drive mount. To do this I had to carefully peel off a flat cable which was stuck to the base. I found fibres and hairs were wound around the two drive shafts and the carriage sprockets and tracks, which I removed with tweezers and a thin art brush.
I then replaced the drive unit on its rubber mounts, placed a dvd on the drive, switched on the power supply (with charger unplugged) and held down the lid switch with the match. The dvd spun at a constant rate indicating that the obstruction had been removed.
